Many people will answer that it’s known as The City of Trees. Yet, there is so much more to Boise than the trees along the Boise River.

For many years, Boise has been known as a hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is often overlooked by more popular cities like Seattle and Portland, but that doesn’t mean it lacks charm. Boise has become increasingly popular among tourists and people thinking about relocating to Idaho. With the kind people, safe neighborhoods, abundance of outdoor activities, and easy-going life, more and more people are falling in love with Boise, Idaho.

What Is Boise Idaho Known For?

City of Trees

Are you curious how Boise got its nickname? The City of Trees nickname was coined in the late 19th century to reflect the abundant greenery and trees that lined the Boise River when fur trappers came across the Boise River valley. They were surprised by the trees surrounding the Boise River, in a high desert region. According to legend, they exclaimed, “Les bois! Les bois!” (which means “The woods! The woods!” in French), and the name stuck.

    Potatoes!

Boise and Idaho as a whole are famous for their potatoes. While the city of Boise isn’t home to sprawling potato farms, it serves as the state’s capital and economic hub, where much of Idaho’s potato industry is managed.

Idaho’s volcanic soil, perfect climate, and abundant water supply create ideal growing conditions, making the state the top potato producer in the United States. The Idaho Potato Commission, headquartered in Boise, has helped brand Idaho potatoes as the gold standard, recognized worldwide for their quality.

    Incredible Outdoor Recreation

Boise is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with many incredible chances for great hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and even the nearby natural hot springs in Idaho. With the Boise River running through the city with the Boise Greenbelt paved trail following it, you don’t even have to leave the city center to enjoy the outdoors.

    Basque Culture

Did you know that Boise has been featured in National Geographic for being a part of The 25 best places in the world to travel to in 2025? How incredible is that? This is because of the Jaialdi Basque Festival happening in July of 2025. Boise is home to one of the largest Basque communities outside of Spain, and every five years, they host a grand festival to celebrate their heritage.
